Air New Zealand passengers flying from Auckland to Nelson on Sunday were left “fuming” after being told the flight was cancelled because of bad weather, only to see other planes fly out without a problem. Several passengers on flight 5253 contacted Waimea Weekly about the experience that left them feeling “ignored” and “frustrated”. Many of the passengers had flown to Auckland for The Eagles concert, while others were travelling back to Nelson after a holiday abroad. Passengers say they were originally told the flight was delayed due to an “engineering fault” but the reason was later changed to poor weather in Auckland. That was despite all but one other flight departing Auckland without a problem. The stranded passengers were later flown to Wellington, not Nelson, because there was no accom-

Pip says that around 1000 people entered into the fun run on Sunday, a number they put down to the fact they had less than a month to inform people of the changes. Tasman district councillor Judene Edgar was amongst those getting stuck into the Muddy Buddy, having taken part in every event since it was started. “It’s family fun, you’ve got to let your hair down, you’ve got to have a bit of fun and laugh at yourself and being covered in mud is a great way to do that. As much
as it’s hard, I just do love scrambling through the mud, it’s a good workout and I just love the costumes and the way people get into it. I think they just did a fantastic job and I’ll be back.” With the new resource consent, the school will be able to host the event for the next 10 years, using the same course people enjoyed on Sunday. A final total hasn’t been worked out yet but the school hopes to have raised around $12,000. That will go towards the finishing touches on their new playground upgrade, some landscaping around the school grounds and subsidising the professional sports shirts for the students.

Waimea Weekly tried to get hold of Air New Zealand to respond to the criticism and ask why it could fly the passengers from Auckland to Wellington but not from Auckland to Nelson. But the airline failed to respond to all attempts, apart from a Tweet, which directed the Weekly to an email address, which went unanswered.

Residents on Croucher and Chisnall streets in Richmond got a big fright when they opened their water bills this month to find they had been charged astronomical amounts. Eighty-nine properties received the inflated bills with one resident, Julian Edmonds, saying he was charged $689 for 858 days use of water over the last six months. “I nearly fell over when I opened my account,” Julian says. “It must be the most expensive water on the planet.” But fortunately the inflated water charges were the result of a billing error by the Tasman District Council which has already taken steps to rectify their mistake. “Yes, there was a billing error in the latest water billing round,” council communication’s advisor Chris Choat says.

Photo: Monique Bergman. “The error was recognised last Thursday and staff did a walk around on the Friday to each of those properties putting an explanation into letterboxes.” Because there is a relatively high number of tenanted properties in the area, Chris says council has written to the landlords of each of the properties to discuss the issue and correct
the billing. “The correct bills will be issued later this week. No-one will be penalised because of the error and the payment date for this round of billing will remain April 20.” Chris says if anyone has any remaining issues about the bills, they are welcome to contact council.

Concern over Hope Hall’s earthquake risk Simon Bloomberg
The earthquake risk of the Hope Hall will be tested in the next two months after an initial seismic assessment showed that it only met 35 per cent of the new building standard. The Tasman District Council is conducting seismic testing of all its public buildings and the Hope Hall was the only one in the latest round of tests to raise some concern. Although the initial test showed that it just exceeded the required government safety rating of 34 per cent of the new building standards, council will be commissioning a detailed assessment “just to
make sure it’s safe”. Council property manager Jim Frater says the initial seismic assessments are based on building consent records and “a quick look at the building”. When the initial rating is less than or only slightly higher than the required 34 per cent, council commissions a detailed seismic assessment conducted by structural engineers to get a more accurate rating. “What we usually find is that the initial assessment is always conservative and the rating of the detailed assessment rises. But we need to make sure the buildings are safe so we will be getting engineers to look at Hope Hall to get much better information

In Port Nelson’s six-monthly report, it stated that industry sources and the Nelson Regional Economic Development Agency indicated that about 20 per cent of the export crop may have been lost due to the hail and that will have an effect on the port’s full year financial result. Last of the harvest ready for ‘summer fare’ Monique Bergman
One of the biggest social events of the year, the popular Sprig & Fern Summer Harvest Fare, returns to Richmond this coming Friday. The street party signifies the end of summer and celebrates the harvest of the region’s hops, grapes and food. Around 25 food and beverage stalls, featuring six local wineries and Sprig & Fern beer, will be on offer. Around 4000 people attended last year’s community event and it is one of the last in the region before daylight saving ends. Major sponsor, the Sprig & Fern
Brewery has been a part of the event for a number of years and owner Tracy Banner says they are proud to be involved. “We are a big part of the Richmond community, it is such a good event and it is great to see people having something to eat and drink and catching up with friends. It is most enjoyable to be involved in it,” says Tracy. This year’s entertainment will feature local covers band, Urban, along with performer Craig Lee. There will also be something for the children with face painting, balloons and a bouncy castle from 6pm to 8pm. Organiser, Kim Quint from

The “good news” continues for the NelsonTasman tourism industry with the latest figures showing a record number of visitors stayed in commercial accommodation in the region in January. Last year, Nelson had 1.25million guest nights, which was the second-highest number since records started in 2000. And the strong performance has continued this year with the latest figures showing that January was a record month with guest nights, increasing 9.8 per cent on last year to 286,921. “The results are very pleasing
and on track with what we were expecting,” Nelson Tasman Tourism chief executive, Lynda Keene says. “I’ve been keeping my fingers crossed that the January results would produce what we secretly thought could be achieved, and they have. “I’m absolutely delighted we have hit new records of total guest nights and international guest nights since records were kept in 2000. The 2007-2008 year produced the highest total guest nights of 1,271,567 and I knew, if the feedback from operators was correct, we were going to have a great season.” Lynda says the international guest nights

SUPER YACHT ARRIVES AT PORT: News that the super yacht “The Hemisphere”, arrived in town got people talking on Nelson Live. As did the weekly rental price, a whopping US$280,000 a week. The super yacht arrived on Saturday and left again on Sunday, it can hold 12 guests and eight crew. Comments were mostly jokes along the same lines, like this from Michelle Sinclair, “OMG, I see a girl’s week coming on! I’m sure if we all put in we could rent it for a week.”

Tourists also stayed in Nelson for longer in January with the length-of-stay averaging a record 3.05 nights. Although Lynda says that’s pleasing, she remains concerned that Nelson-Tasman still experiences the biggest drop of guest nights in winter. “The region has the fourth highest lengthof-stay on an annual basis but does experience the biggest drop of guest nights in
winter. This is why it’s critical the region invests in infrastructure and marketing that will produce increased visitation during May-September.” Lynda attributed the record guest nights to a combination of factors, including the continued development of cycle tourism, associated and promotion of the region’s wineries, restaurants, arts and sports events. Lynda says Nelson Tasman Tourism’s “very selective” marketing has also helped produce positive results that either tracked or exceeded national trends, particularly in the high season.

Snapper Classic hooks a big crowd and plenty of fish Along with a whole lot of fish, this year’s Tasman Bay Snapper Classic reeled in $7228 for their chosen charity, Big Brothers Big Sisters of New Zealand. The competition had 50 teams of four competing in the bay to hook the heaviest snapper. Teams were awarded prizes based on the heaviest combination of four fish. Before the prize giving, a charity auction headed by Murray Leaning took place, with sponsors’ goods auctioned off as well as some of the fish caught that day. Event organiser Troy Dando says, along with some of the entry fee, the money would be a big benefit to the Big Brothers Big Sisters char-
ity. “It’s a great cause, helping young people out, especially those who are underprivileged and can’t get out there and do things.” The winning team with the heaviest catch was the Würth NZ team, “Wurth a Shot”, who have now won the competition three times in a row. Team member Oliver McPherson netted a single snapper weighing just over 9kg. Troy says a lot of it can just come down to luck. “There is luck and skill on the day, not all teams weighed in four fish so their team total was down. The one that got second only weighed in three
fish. Had they had a fourth fish they may have won.” Another notable catch was a kingfish weighing in around 15kg. The event was delayed a week due to the bad weather and Troy says he was glad he made that decision. He says the change in date didn’t suit some people but he also managed to get more signed up with the extra time. “We lost a few, but we also picked a few up.” He says he couldn’t have run the event and raised the money without the generosity of his sponsors, notably Simrad, Big Blue, Totally Boating, Nelson Weekly and the Speight’s Ale House.

SPCA overwhelmed by stray cats Monique Bergman The Nelson SPCA is being overwhelmed by stray cats and kittens with almost 100 now being cared for at their Waimea Rd shelter. Nelson SPCA general manager, Donna Walz says the number of cats is comparable to last year, however the difference is that no one is coming in to adopt and take them home. “Quite a few kittens have gone to new homes, which is great but it is their lovely mothers who just seem to be forgotten and left behind,” says Donna. As an incentive, the SPCA is offering free starter packs for the first 10 adult cat adoptions. The packs include, a box to transport the cats home in, litter trays and food. The process of adopting a cat or kitten involves matching the right animal with the right family and

Andrew Board Nayland Pools set a new record for the greatest number of swimmers in a month with 13,137 people jumping into the pools in January but this Saturday it will be turned over to the dogs. The pools close to humans this Friday, March 20, but the following day it’s over to the dogs, with the complex being opened up to man’s best friend. The “Dog’s Splash” will be held on Saturday and Dave McKenzie, the manager of the pools, says dogs are invited to come along and enjoy the pools for free. “We’ll have lifeguards and tennis balls for the dogs so it should be fun.” Dave says it’s the first time they’ve done a dog’s splash but other pools around New Zealand do it and it could become a regular at Nayland as well. The dog’s splash is open from 10am to 12 noon and all sociable, registered and clean dogs are invited. Dave says this summer has been one of the best for the pools with January breaking the previous record for most number of swimming, which had stood since January 2008, with 11,781. Dave says its been a fantastic year for the facility, with plenty of sun keeping locals hungry for a cool swimming pool. “We now also hold the record for the most to an outdoor wave rave with 175 attendees, so it’s been a great summer for the facility.” Dave says the pools usually see about 32,000 people through in a season but he’s hoping for more this year. “The weather’s been the main reason for the increase but we’ve also had swimming camps from Wellington and Christchurch here which helped increase the numbers.”

Normally under such arrangements the chair is a titular position and not an executive position. In other words the president has no executive powers. Win caps off a top weekend for our local pipe band It was a home turf award at the National Pipe Band Championships on Friday as the Celtic Pipe Band of Stoke took home the championship award. There was no mistaking the sound of bag pipes heard around the city on Friday and Saturday as 45 bands from New Zealand and Australia competed in the championship competition. The event started on Friday with performances at Trafalgar Park. On Saturday, competitors marched down Halifax, Trafalgar and Hardy Sts, followed by the final competitions. Just three years after winning the Grade 4A championships, the Stoke band won grade 3. Pipe Major Bryce Gilchrist headed the Stoke band who won both the set and medley as well as the full championship. He says it is fantastic to be able to win the cham-
pionships when their city was host. “Absolutely the cream on the cake was having won on our own home turf and having our own mayor presenting us with the trophies.” The band also came second in the street march behind the Wellington Red Hackle, a team with two players from Tasman. Nelson mayor Rachel Reese overlooked the parade on Trafalgar St along with presidents of both the New Zealand and Australian pipe band associations. Event organiser, Helen Gilchrist, says Rachel was delighted with the results and the council is supportive of a bid to run the national contest again in two years’ time. Helen says the event has had fantastic support from locals and community groups such as Scouts and Army Cadets who helped with setting-up and marshalling.

Brightwater turns out for school gala Monique Bergman The sun was out and shining and so were the kids as they entertained the crowds at the annual Brightwater School Gala. The Brightwater community supported the event and enjoyed lunch on the grass while children took to the stage and sang and danced for the audience. There was a real country feel to the gala with a farmer’s market selling fresh home-grown fruit and vegetables and various home-made arts, crafts and food. The silent auction was popular again and there were baskets full of goodies for the raffles. Plenty of fun and action was had on the back field, with climbing walls, a bouncy castle, giant balls and a laser tag range. For those wanting quieter activities, a beauty area was available complete with a hair and nail salon and face painting. Principal, Gerald Baldwin says it was a great day out and the community supported the gala, despite many other events being on at the same time. Around $24,000 was raised with all proceeds going towards building a 500m cycle trail within the school grounds, which will be used for daily exercise along with education on bike safety and preparing the children for riding the Tasman Great Taste Trail.

Speciality varieties grown in our region, such as Nelson Sauvin and Motueka, are in high demand from the international market because of their big aromas. “Our product is unique in the fact that our hops are grown without the use of fungicides or pesticides and our hops have no diseases, which we are recognised internationally for,” says Doug. Fourth generation hop farmer, Peter Lines from Totara Brewing, grows 12 varieties of hops on his property in Wakefield. Peter says his client base has increased over the past 10 years due to the worldwide growth of both small and large craft beer breweries. Peter says his harvesting machine is working seven hours a day and he expects his 12 staff will harvest around 27 tonnes this season.

Dentist Alvin Cooper has been practising at 4 Salisbury Rd in Richmond for twenty years. He has sold his practice to local dentist Steph Wills, who says that she feels honoured to have been entrusted with the care of Alvin’s patients. Alvin has been in the industry for almost 50 years. He graduated from Otago University in 1966 and then spent four years in the UK, where he met and married his wife Dianne. Returning to New Zealand he worked for 18 years in Westport, which he thoroughly enjoyed. “The West Coast community being how it is I mixed with all types, ending up with a broad spectrum of friends,” says Alvin. What many patients don’t know is that he was a keen runner and harrier and has completed seven marathons. He also had his private pilot’s license, which came in handy flying to Christchurch from the Coast to attend dental meetings and lectures. The professional isolation and difficulty in accessing continuing education eventually led to
Alvin leaving the West Coast for Nelson. Initially he worked with Andrew Meffan, before setting up by himself at 4 Salisbury Rd where he is today. Alvin is now looking forward to taking a back seat and having time to focus on his love of history and restoring and riding old motorbikes. He will continue to work one day a week at the Richmond practice. Steph Wills has thirty years experience in dentistry and owns a large practice in Motueka. She is looking forward to dividing her time between the two practices. Steph says that their philosophy is to perform dentistry to a high standard and to treat people in a manner in which they themselves would like to be treated. “I enjoy my job on a technical level but it is the people that make it. Alvin feels the same, we have a similar standard and expectations with regard to patient care. Preparations are well underway as Club Waimea gets set to host the Clubs New Zealand 2015 annual conference and annual general meeting this week. The conference is a prestigious event that Clubs New Zealand distributes carefully and it’s the first time Club Waimea has hosted the event after it was transferred to their premises. Even though they were required to play hosts at short notice, the efforts
to get the club in tip-top shape have been a success and they are now more than ready to look after the 230 delegates and other guests who will make up the conference party, says Club Waimea manager John Hewison. At the same time, Club Waimea will also be housing an expo on club-related equipment, from coffee machines to gaming machines, which will be on display for people to view. The conference will see around 400 people converge on Club Waimea over the three days. country. Those visiting the club will also enjoy some time off to take in the sights and activities that the area has to offer, with musical entertainment organised within Club Waimea and a mystery trip for the delegates. With volunteer work already contributing a great deal to the preparations for the event, and further help already being organised for the arrival of the conference’s delegates, Club Waimea are still looking for volunteers to transport their visitors around. Facebook, Pinterest, Youtube, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat. Some of you reading this are so lost right now and all you read was You-Twit-Face. If that’s you, let me explain. It’s 2015! We live in an age that loves to use social media to share what we’re doing, what we’ve done, and what we wish we were doing instead. But why? Do you really need to Instagram what you’re eating for breakfast? Do I really need to watch your cat chase your dog into a glass door? Why do I feel the need to Snapchat my kid’s sleeping like a starfish? And why can’t we stop checking it, even when we go to the bathroom. (Yes, you can admit it, you know you do it, too!) We use social media to share what’s important to us and what we’re passionate about. This is why we love sharing awesome videos of mountain biking, pictures from our weekend and articles about our profession. But I ask the question again - why share at all? I think perhaps it’s because we have a deep desire and longing to be noticed and liked. When we send or post something we eagerly await to see how many followers or likes we can get. For example, do you find yourself feeling low and then snapping a selfie of you looking your best and then title it, ‘just woke up’ or ‘not feeling good’ today and then stand by and wait for

Waimea College athletes broke 16 records at the school’s track and field championships held at Saxton Field last week with runner Bridie Edwards and high jumpers setting six of the new marks. High jumpers Corbyn Robb (under-14), Phillip Jordan (under-15) and Megan Stack (under-16) all set records last Thursday clearing 1.57m, 1.63m and 1.60m respectively. Corbyn also broke the 200m record in the heats but was unable to run in the final after sustaining an injury. Bridie set records in the under-16 girls 800m and 1500m on Thursday before backing-up with her third record, in the 3000m, on Friday. Rainbow Rage celebrates 20 years Simon Bloomberg
On Boxing Day in 1995, Mike Gane and Barry Chamberlain mountainbiked from St Arnaud through the old stock-driving route to Hanmer Springs. When they were sitting in the pub afterwards enjoying “the best pie and pint we’d ever had”, Mike says they agreed the ride would be “a bloody good idea for an event”. The following year, the “bloody good idea” became a reality when Mike organised the first Rainbow Rage mountainbike race from St Arnaud to Hanmer Springs. Sixty-six riders competed in the 106km race and although it was cold and wet with a bone-chilling head wind, the riders raved about it and entries increased dramatically to a peak of 1604 in 2001. Although numbers have fluctuated since then it still remains extremely popular with many riders notching up 10 or more Rainbow Rages and around 500 riders expected at this year’s 20th edition. “At the prizegiving last year, I asked riders who had done 10 or more Rainbow Rages to put up their hands and I was surprised
at how many there were,” Mike says. “We even had one rider, Ian Gabites, who had done it 15 times. “There’s also been quite a few families doing it together. Last year, the fastest woman, Olivia Miller, was racing against her father, Tim.” Of course there have always been some riders who have needed more of a challenge than simply riding 106 kilometres. Nelson’s world marathon mountainbike champion Tim Vincent rode a 1937 Swiss army bike weighing a hefty 20 kilograms in 2008, Wellington’s Ken Looi rode a unicycle in 2005 while multisport racers Richard and Elina Ussher completed a double Rainbow Rage in 2012 riding back to St Arnaud into a strong headwind just minutes after arriving at Hanmer Springs. Some of the country’s biggest cycling names have also lined up in the Rainbow Rage. Tim dominated the event from 2002 to 2006 while his Swiss wife, Sandy Kunz won the women’s race from 2004 to 2007. Multisport legend Nathan Fa’avae, who won the inaugural race, and Tour de France riders Jack Bauer and Nathan Dahlberg have also taken line honours.
Riders blast through one of the many fords on the Rainbow Rage last year. Saturday’s 20th Rainbow rage also promises to be fast and furious at the business end of the field with Tim Filmer, who set the record of 3 hours 26 minutes 18seconds in 2012 expected to line up against last year’s winner Henry Jaine and Nathan Fa’avae.
But the Rainbow Rage is not just about the speedsters. Above all, it is an adventure ride and that’s what Mike believes has made it one the country’s most iconic mountainbike events. “It’s not a race, it’s a ride,” Mike insists. “We called it a race the first year we did it but the next year we changed it to an adventure ride with the emphasis on participation and it took off. “It’s a ride that anyone, with a reasonable level of fitness, can do and I think most people just enjoy treating it as a personal challenge rather than a race.” As well as the personal challenge and amazing camaraderie that riders experience on their journey, Mike says the other big appeal is the spectacular and constantly changing scenery. Riders wind their way through pristine beech forests and climb into vast subalpine highcountry, over Island Saddle and alongside the Clarence River before ascending Jacks Pass and then plunging six kilometres and 620 vertical metres down to the finish at Hanmer Springs Domain. The Rainbow Rage will be held this Saturday starting at 9am.
Winning runner earns free entry for life Nelson runner Phil Costley completed a five-peat of the Kaiteriteri Gold Half Marathon winning the challenging race around the hills near Kaiteriteri in a fast 1hr 16min 5sec. And the bad news for his competitors is that Phil is likely to be back to defend his title after receiving a permanent free entry into the race as part of his prize for winning. Mapua’s Dave Keen
was second in 1hr 24min 47sec, Sam Coombes of Blenheim third in 1hr 29min 24sec and Nelson’s Stu Cottam fourth in 1hr 30min 1sec. Motueka’s Colette Read won the women’s half marathon in 1hr 39min 55sec. Waimea College year 10 student, Cameron Jones, won the 10km race in 37min 39 sec. Hannah Viner of England won
the women’s 10km in 38min 27min 2sec ahead of Nelson’s Robyn Deane who recorded 43min 3sec. Walk winners were Peter Hague and Elaine Lewellin in the half while the consistent Bevan Cook, who competed in the M70+ age group, and Lyn Smith strode to 10km titles. Around 200 intermediate students from seven Nelson, Stoke and Richmond schools competed in the annual Interschool Swimming Competition held at Nayland Pool last Friday. There was a very high standard of swimming at the meet with three records broken during the competition. Piper Riley from Waimea Intermediate School broke the only individual record of the day in the year seven girls 50m freestyle race, with a new time of 32.34sec, beating Ellie Rukuwai’s previous record of 32.45 set in 2009. Two more records were broken, this time in the relays with Waimea Intermediate School slashing the long stand-
ing year eight girls 4 x 50m freestyle record with a new time of 2min 12 sec. The previous record was set in 1998 by Nelson College for Girls Preparatory School. Nelson College for Boys Preparatory School also broke their own school’s previous record of 2min 10sec in the 3 x 50m medley relay with a new time of 2min 5.28sec. There were some outstanding individual performances at the swim meet with Bendi Kepess from Waimea Intermediate School winning the boys year eight grade A final of the butterfly, freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke races. Dancing sisters make ballet school For Richmond sisters Isabel and Georgia Norriss, ballet is not just an art, it is a passion and a way of life. Waimea College student Isabel, was accepted into the New Zealand School of Dance as a classical major in the associates programme after auditioning in September last year. At 13, she attends four weekends of tuition throughout the year at the prestigious dance school in Wellington. The Associates Programme identifies ballet and contemporary dance students who have the talent for a career in dance and places are strictly limited. Isabel is in a class of 12 dancers from around the country, who are assessed regularly and can only progress to the next
level of the programme by invitation only. “It was really exciting to be accepted, dancing makes me feel happy and I really want to get into the Royal New Zealand Ballet and Royal Ballet in London one day,” says Isabel. Georgia, aged 11, has been dancing for six years and is as equally talented as her older sister. She was accepted into the New Zealand School of Dance in the Scholars programme after auditioning in Wellington last December. The programme provides training for classical ballet students from the age of 10 with dancers from the lower North Island invited to attend. Under special circumstances, students from other regions are invited and Georgia

They train seven days a week, which includes ballet classes, pilates, body conditioning, and strengthening and practicing routines. The talent doesn’t stop with the girls as their mother, Amanda, represented New Zealand in gymnastics and appreciates the high level of dedication required to com-
pete at top level. Both girls will also perform in front of international judges at the highly-regarded Alana Haines Australasian Awards, in Wellington at Easter. Isabel will be performing in the supreme A section and Georgia will be entering in the competition for the first time in the junior scholar section. Isabel reached the semi-finals at the last awards held two years ago and hopes to do better at this year’s awards. The dance event, which runs over four days, is the largest in Australasia with over 430 entries and over $300,000 worth of awards and international training scholarships from dance schools around the world on offer.

Nelson swimmers make NZ team Nelson Waimea Gun Club results Four Nelson swimmers will represent New Zealand at the Australian Age championships in Sydney next month. Sam McKenzie, 15, Caitlin Delany,16, Thomas Heaton, 16, from the Tasman Swimming Club and Clara Foster, 15, from the Nelson South Club were confirmed in the 30 person squad last week. The Georgina Hope Swimmers Foundation Australia Age Championship will be held at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre from April 13 to 18. Caitlin will compete in the female 16 years 100m breaststroke, Thomas will race in the male 16 years 400m and 1500m freestyle, Sam has qualified for the 50m, 100m, 200m, 400m and 1500m freestyle and Clara will swim in the 100m and 200m breaststroke and 200 individual medley. It recognises the fact that they have worked very hard and these kids have listened and had faith in what I have asked them to do, and as result,
they are swimming fast. “There is loads of potential in this region. We just need the opportunity to mature and develop,” says Andy. Caitlin, who attends Waimea College, was excited to receive the email from selectors confirming her spot on the team. Her goal is to make the finals of the 100m breaststroke race and she is working hard with Andy on improving her stroke. “My aim was to make the qualifying time, which I did in Wellington back in January. It has been a long wait to find out whether I got into the team and I am pretty happy, it is my biggest achievement so far,” says Caitlin. Andy will also travel to Sydney as one of the New Zealand team coaches. “There is nothing better as a coach than being on the team too, it is always a thrill to get on the New Zealand team,” says Andy.

Waimea College Girls Volleyball Waimea College’s national volleyball champions are aiming to go back-to-back when they head to the national schools championships this week. Last year the Waimea College girls A team won the national title and with a strong core of last year’s squad heading back this year, there’s confidence they can remain best in the country. Four new players from last year’s B team and a fifth player who transferred to Waimea College have filled the void of last year’s stars and coach Josh Ovsenek says they’re determined to do well, but they have some stiff competition vying
for their crown. “We’re usually a top eight squad and I think this year’s nationals are going to be even tougher. The competition will be even stronger and having won it last year, people will be out to play their best game against us,” he says. The team won the recent Tasman Champs last weekend, a positive step for the team, says Josh, although preparations also took on the form of a team bonding session at the Nelson Fire Station. “It’s been our third or fourth time training at the station and each time the team there really put the girls through good team building ex-

ercises, to see where we’ll be and how we can cope with different stress and pressure and things like that. We’ve found that every year it’s been a big help bringing the girls together and it actually shows them what they can do if they work together as a team,” Josh But it isn’t just the A team hoping for glory, the Waimea College girls B team won their division last year as well and expectations are high for them to also do a repeat. The team hasn’t seen major changes to players since last year so their familiarity and the work they did together during
last year’s competition should stand them in good stead to achieve their target again in 2015. Their performance has drastically improved in the last two weeks, shown when they beat Nayland College’s A team at the Tasman Champs tournament at Saxton Stadium last weekend. Coach Dayna Whiting says she had set that as their goal for the competition and was happy they had succeeded in reaching it, coming fourth overall. Both teams head to nationals on Saturday with the competition starting on Monday and running for the entire week.

Feedback sought – Rural land use and subdivision policy review
Proposed Road Closures to Ordinary Vehicular Traffic
In recent months, the Council has been preparing changes to rural land use and subdivision provisions in its Tasman Resource Management Plan. Feedback on a Draft Plan Change is now being sought from residents. The proposed changes could provide opportunities for rural housing and subdivision with specific opportunities for rural commercial activities, cooperative living and rural-residential development. The new ideas have been developed from an earlier period of consultation on issues and options and Council workshops on the feedback received. The Council is now seeking public input into the Draft Plan Change until the end of March 2015. The Rates Rebate Scheme operates under the Rates Rebate Act 1973. The purpose of the Scheme is to provide a subsidy to low income home owners on the cost of their rates. The maximum rebated for this rating year is $605. Forms are held in each of the Council’s offices. These have a Rates Rebate Income Eligibility Table on the front. The property you are applying for must be your principal place of residence. You cannot claim a rates rebate for the rates payable on a property that is used principally for business, farming, commercial or industrial purposes, or a home that is not your usual place of residence.
